Esta investigación se emprende motivada por la necesidad de desentrañar la progresión delos modelos de aprendizaje, los cuales se han ido adaptando para responder a las demandas de lasociedad en su dinámica constante de fluctuación y transformaciones. El objetivo de este trabajo es examinar de forma sistemática la evolución de los modelos de aprendizaje, destacando los cambios paradigmáticos que han favorecido la transición de enfoques de aprendizaje tradicionales hacia propuestas más innovadoras y transdisciplinarias. Para lograrlo, se lleva a cabo un (...) análisis bibliográfico apoyado en el método hermenéutico para la interpretación contextual de la literatura y los discursos, a fin de desentrañar las complejidades inherentes en la evolución de los modelos de aprendizaje. Los resultados resaltan la influencia limitante del paradigma de la simplicidad en laformación educativa tradicional y la necesidad de un giro hacia la dialogicidad y la colaboración eintegración disciplinaria para avanzar hacia la complejidad. Se concluye argumentando a favor de la adopción del paradigma de la complejidad, abogando por una epistemología transdisciplinariay un enfoque de aprendizaje interestructurante, que permitan el desarrollo humano integral.El reconocimiento de la complejidad humana en la enseñanza y el aprendizaje exige una transformación radical de la educación hacia prácticas más holísticas y transformadoras, esenciales para construir una sociedad equitativa y justa. De su conocimiento, iniciativa, praxis y creatividad depende el éxito o el fracaso del sujeto que aprende. Al modificar el rol del docente se transforma la actitud de los estudiantes. ¿Cómo entender la formación filosófica transdisciplinar? Este texto responde a este y otros cuestionamientos: ¿cuáles son los planteamientos pedagógicos afines a la era digital? ¿en qué medida las TIC se encuentran al servicio de una filosofía (...) educativa transdisciplinar?, ¿cómo se explica ese enfoque en la formación del docente?, ¿cuál es la función de la formación en la innovación educativa?, ¿cómo formar para la ciudadanía mundial?, ¿cuáles son las contribuciones de las nuevas ciencias para la formación educativa? À l'aube de la troisième décennie du XXIe siècle, l'existence de l'humanité est devenue hautement périlleuse. Nous abattons nos forêts, épuisons nos aquifères d'eau douce et perdons nos sols vitaux. Nous enlevons la vie de nos océans et la remplaçons par des centaines de millions de tonnes de déchets plastiques. Nous inondons notre environnement de produits chimiques industriels toxiques. Notre pollution est à l'origine du changement climatique qui provoque des vagues de chaleur, des sécheresses et des incendies de forêt qui (...) déchirent le tissu de la vie sur les continents. Et nous mettons au monde de nouvelles générations, des millions qui ont besoin d'accéder aux ressources d'une existence digne. La portée et l'ampleur des menaces à la vie augmentent jour après jour. Ce n'est pas un mode de développement durable. La cause profonde de nos maux provient d'une façon de penser erronée. Qu'est-ce que cela signifie exactement? cela signifie que nous nous considérons principalement comme des êtres matériels, tout en niant notre nature spirituelle. Parce quenous pensons que nous existons en tant qu'êtres matériels et rien de plus, nous accordons la importance à la protection de notre corps contre les dommages et à la prolongation de notre existence matérielle. Notre nature spirituelle, si elle est considérée du tout, est traitée comme un aspect secondaire de notre être physique, quelque chose à ne pas prendre au sérieux. Pour nous, les seules choses qui comptent sont les phénomènes qui apparaissent dans le monde matériel - des choses qui peuvent être vues, ou entendues, ou touchées, ou mesurées, mais nous savons que nos sens nous trompent, les sens sont une construction du cerveau . Ce que nous considérons comme un monde réel est une illusion. La domination de la pensée positiviste et matérialiste conduit à l'irrationalité et à la destruction. Mais où cette approche nous a-t-elle menés ? Cela nous a-t-il apporté un sentiment de bonheur et d'épanouissement ? Les mots que nous prononçons sont responsables de tout ce qui se passe dans ce monde. Nous devons donc être responsables des paroles que nous prononçons. Au nom des générations futures, j'espère que chacun de nous fera tout ce qui est en son pouvoir pour ne dire que des mots clairs et lumineux, afin qu'un jour, nos descendants naissent dans un monde rempli de lumière. Il n'y a pas de temps à perdre. À partir de ce moment précis, j'espère que nous examinerons tous de près les mots que nous avons utilisés et que nous ferons des efforts constants pour les remplir de luminosité. Personne ne changera nos vies à notre place. Personne ne changera le monde à notre place. Il est temps pour chacun de nous de reconnaître le pouvoir créatif prodigieux qui se dégage de chaque mot que nous prononçons et de ne prononcer consciemment que des mots remplis de gratitude, d'encouragement et de bonnes intentions. À partir de ce moment, choisissons des mots qui résonnent d'amour et de pardon pour nous-mêmes et pour les autres. Nous pouvons certainement le faire si nous ne faisons qu'un pas en avant. Esta obra colectiva expone diversas concepciones teóricas, ontológicas, epistemológicas, axiológicas y prácticas sobre el origen, sentido, problemáticas, ventajas, detrimentos, alternativas y desafías de la filosofía de la innovación y su incidencia en la educación; reflexiona sobre las contribuciones de la tecnología y responde a interrogantes como: ¿Cuáles son los aporte de la tradición filosófica, del pensamiento ilustrado, de la postmodernidad y de la teoría crítica para la filosofía de la innovación educativa?; ¿Cuál es la función de la filosofía para la (...) comprensión de la innovación?; ¿Cómo se explica el progreso tecno-científico desde la epistemología contemporánea?; ¿Cuál es el componente pedagógico de la innovación?; ¿Cuáles son las aportaciones del Laudato Si para la innovación educativa?. Además, plantea la necesidad de repensar algunos aspectos relacionados con la educación, el Estado y la identidad latinoamericana para determinar las posibilidades, las limitaciones y los retos de la innovación, entendida como un fenómeno en permanente construcción. En este artículo se analiza una recreación quijotesca en la novela de Graham Greene Monseñor Quijote. Para ello se utilizan dos términos procedentes del Derecho romano: los conceptos de autoridad y poder. En esta obra de Greene, la autoridad surge de los libros o de autores de libros, cuya lectura permite que la vida siga teniendo sentido. En Greene encontramos la estrategia de lectura conocida como las sortes virgilianae que permite a los personajes orientarse en las dificultades diarias. Sin embargo, (...) el poder está caracterizado por su condición iletrada, la ausencia de libros y su ignorancia. In this article a novel by Graham Greene entitled Monsignor Quixote is analysed, a book that involves a recreation of the novel by Cervantes. The author of this article employs two concepts from Roman law: authority and power in his analysis. In this work by Greene, authority arises from the books or the book writers, whose reading allows life to keep making sense. In Greene, a strategy of reading known as the sortes virgilianae is found and this allows the characters to get their bearings in the daily difficulties. This article examines whether the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) should re-examine the allocation of a World Cup to a host state that fails to comply with the association’s human rights policy—a question made urgent by the 2026 Men’s World Cup and the conduct of the current United States administration. Drawing on the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) and the concept of institutional complicity, the article argues that FIFA bears both endogenous obligations (derived from (...) its own Human Rights Policy and hosting agreements) and exogenous obligations (arising from international human rights law), which together require it to broaden its host-selection criteria beyond formal democratic conditions and to adopt continuous ex ante and ex post human rights monitoring—including, where necessary, reconsidering the designation itself. A implementação de tecnologias móveis de informação e comunicação no suporte à Saúde Mental tem atraído a atenção das autoridades. Com a ascensão das Inteligências Artificiais, esse movimento pode ser impulsionado de maneira exponencial. Nesse cenário, esta revisão tem como objetivos verificar a aplicabilidade das Inteligências Artificiais (IAs) na Saúde Mental e analisar os aspectos que favorecem a relação entre IAs e usuários. Para tanto, realizou-se uma revisão sistemática nas bases de dados PubMed e Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, no período (...) de 25 de maio a 23 de junho de 2023. Selecionamos os 100 primeiros artigos mais relevantes com as palavras-chave: “Inteligência Artificial”, “Saúde Mental”, “Chatbots”, “Psicoterapia”, “Psicologia” e suas equivalentes em inglês. Os critérios de inclusão foram: acesso aberto, publicação a partir de 2018, em português ou inglês e menção à atuação de IAs no âmbito da Saúde Mental. Para reduzir o risco de viés, excluímos os estudos que não mensuraram o impacto das intervenções por meio de métodos experimentais ou quase-experimentais. Para a síntese dos dados, delimitaram-se alguns pontos específicos de análise, como “Resultado da intervenção”, “Aspectos que favorecem a relação”, entre outros. Atenderam aos critérios de inclusão 24 estudos, dos quais 17 apresentaram resultados positivos em suas intervenções. O uso de IAs na Saúde Mental possui grande potencial de expansão e os resultados obtidos neste trabalho podem guiar a implementação dessas práticas e futuras pesquisas na área. (shrink)

Trata-se de uma investigação sobre a teoria dos primeiros princípios da razão prática na obra de Tomás de Aquino. No centro dessa teoria está o termo “sindérese”, cujo conteúdo foi elaborado nas discussões da filosofia e da teologia medievais, a partir de sua menção na Glosa de Jerônimo a Ezequiel. Tal termo designa um conceito que apresenta um caráter inovador dentro da teoria da ação moral em comparação com a ética aristotélica. Afinal, Tomás de Aquino o entende como o hábito (...) dos primeiros princípios da moral, equivalente ao hábito dos primeiros princípios teóricos de Aristóteles. Dessa forma, o interesse é compreender como o conceito de sindérese é recebido e desenvolvido na filosofia moral de Tomás de Aquino através da análise das três questões tradicionais: de sua natureza, de sua infalibilidade e de sua extinção. Our knowledge about colonial philosophical manuscripts preserved in the «Fondo Antiguo» and «Fondo Varios» at the National Historical Archive is limited almost exclusively to its listing and location. In some cases, there is a very brief description of the contents, identification of their philosophical tendency and some information about their authors. In order to expand our knowledge about them, we have tried here, on the one hand, to provide a more detailed description of the contents of the works, and, on (...) the other hand, to systematise the information provided by different catalogues. For this work, the contents of the original manuscripts and the corresponding microfiche have been revised and described. Thus, we have been able to correct some errors concerning location and content. We therefore hope to contribute, even minimally, to the construction of the history of philosophy in Chile. (shrink)

The Question of a Spacetime without Centre -/- From Aristotle to Kant, Western philosophy approached space and time primarily as conditions of the possibility of experience or as properties of reality. In the Aristotelian tradition, space is defined topologically — as the place of bodies — and time arithmetically — as 'the number of motions with respect to before and after'. In Kantian critical philosophy, space and time become a priori forms of intuition, transcendental conditions of all phenomenal experience. Yet (...) in both traditions a common assumption is preserved: space and time are structures that organise phenomena from a — however implicit — centre of reference. Alexis Karpouzos radically challenges this assumption. The Spherical Spacetime he introduces is neither place nor intuition; it is a dynamic ontological structure that refuses every privileged point of reference, every external centre, every principle that precedes the very movement of the world. The question posed from the outset is this: what does it mean to think a spacetime that does not 'contain' beings but is the very manner in which beings are? And what ontological consequences does this displacement carry for the understanding of existence, consciousness, and truth? -/- Pan-Centricity: The Overcoming of the Metaphysics of the Arché -/- Western metaphysics was shaped in large measure as a search for a first principle — a privileged point of departure that explains and grounds all others. Thales declared water to be the arché, Anaximander the apeiron, Pythagoras number. In the great metaphysical tradition that followed, this principle assumed different names — God, Logos, Subject, Spirit, Will — but always preserved the structure of a privileged centre from which meaning radiates outward. Even where Western philosophy appears to abandon this model — as in Nietzsche's 'death of God' — it continues to define itself negatively in relation to it: the absence of a centre is experienced as loss, as nihilism, as a crisis of meaning. Karpouzos takes a different step: he does not mourn the absence of a centre, nor does he seek a new centre to replace the lost one — he proposes that the very structure of existence is pan-centric. -/- Pan-Centricity as an Ontological Position -/- For there to be no privileged centre does not mean there is no structure at all. It means that every point of existence is simultaneously centre and periphery — that every being, in its singularity, expresses a relation to the whole that cannot be reduced to any common denominator. This position appears, on first reading, paradoxical: how can every point be a centre if there is no centre? Karpouzos's answer is that the paradox arises from the insistence on the geometric image of the centre — a unique point from which all others are defined. If we relinquish this image, pan-centricity becomes intelligible as mutual constitution: each being is defined by its relation to every other, and none precedes ontologically the relations that constitute it. The closest parallel position in the Western tradition is found in Spinoza: the Substantia as absolute totality expressing itself in infinite attributes and infinite modi, each of which expresses the single substance in its own manner. Yet in Spinoza the Substantia remains — at least stylistically — a privileged foundation. In Karpouzos there is no such foundation: the totality does not precede the relations, but is precisely those relations in their dynamic mutual constitution. The Heraclitean tradition offers a fertile convergence here. For Heraclitus, 'everything flows' — reality is flux, and flux has no fixed point of departure. The One that emerges through the Many is not a separate principle standing apart from the Many, but the very manner in which the Many sustain one another in their opposition. Spherical Spacetime takes up this intuition and gives it systematic ontological articulation. (shrink)

Hannah Arendt (1906–1975) stands as one of the most original political thinkers of the twentieth century — not merely because of her scholarship, but because of her capacity to think within the rupture of history. Born in Germany and shaped by the philosophical traditions of continental Europe, Arendt's intellectual life unfolded in the shadow of profound existential and political dislocation. Her biography is inseparable from the crises of her time, and her work is marked by a continual attempt to make (...) sense of the human condition under conditions of rupture, exile, and transformation. Raised in Königsberg, a city once associated with the critical philosophy of Immanuel Kant, Arendt’s early exposure to learning and inquiry positioned her to engage not only with abstract questions, but with the reality of political life. Her studies in philosophy, theology, and classical philology were not pursuits of academic detachment but rather modes of inquiry into the nature of existence, plurality, and responsibility. Under the influence of Martin Heidegger, Arendt encountered phenomenology — a method of returning to the immediacy of lived experience. But while Heidegger explored Being in abstraction, Arendt would later shift toward a more worldly engagement: to understand the conditions under which human beings appear to one another, speak, act, and judge. Her dissertation on the concept of love in the thought of Saint Augustine reveals an early preoccupation with natality — the fact of birth as the beginning of uniqueness — and the human desire for transcendence. These existential concerns would remain central throughout her thought, but they were soon reframed by the concrete historical rupture of the 1930s. The rise of totalitarianism forced Arendt into exile, initiating a lifelong confrontation with statelessness, the breakdown of political belonging, and the question of human rights. -/- Her experiences as a refugee and as a Jew under Nazi persecution were not only biographical facts but philosophical revelations. In losing the formal protection of the state, Arendt came to see that the foundation of human dignity is not legal status alone, but recognition — the acknowledgment of one's humanity within a shared world. This insight would later inform her analysis of the pariah, the stateless, and the condition of rootlessness that defines modernity. Interned in France during the war and later arriving in the United States in 1941, Arendt found herself in a new context that both challenged and expanded her thought. While she faced the disorientation of exile, she also encountered a different political tradition — one that emphasized constitutionalism, federalism, and public freedom. Her philosophical reflection began to shift from the metaphysical orientation of early European thought to a more political ontology: a concern with how freedom appears in the world, how action becomes meaningful, and how the human capacity for beginning — for natality — might form the basis of a new political ethics. In the United States, Arendt did not retreat into academic isolation but entered into the vibrant intellectual life of postwar New York, where she joined a community of exiled thinkers, writers, and artists. It was here that she began to articulate her most significant contributions, not only as a theorist of totalitarianism, but as a thinker concerned with the conditions under which human beings live together in freedom. Becoming a U.S. citizen in 1950 did not merely mark a legal change; it represented, for Arendt, a re-entry into political life — a renewed commitment to a world in which human plurality, responsibility, and judgment could be reimagined. Her thought is not reducible to ideology or method; rather, it is a continuous engagement with the fundamental questions of existence: What does it mean to be human in a world where politics can both reveal and destroy our shared reality? How is freedom possible amid necessity? And what responsibility does each individual bear for the shape of the world we co-create? -/- The period in which Hannah Arendt lived and developed her thought was one of unprecedented upheaval — a century defined by war, displacement, ideological struggle, and the fragmentation of shared meaning. The first half of the twentieth century had witnessed the collapse of empires, the trauma of two world wars, the mechanized cruelty of the Holocaust, and the rise of totalitarian states. These events did not merely shape historical circumstances; they shattered traditional assumptions about progress, morality, and the nature of human society. In the aftermath of destruction, a new global order emerged, marked by the Cold War’s ideological bifurcation — a world divided between East and West, each claiming to represent the truth of human freedom. It was within this fractured and contested space that Arendt pursued her philosophical project, asking not only how such horrors had occurred, but what it meant to live and think responsibly in their shadow. During the 1950s and 1960s, Arendt produced some of her most significant works, including The Origins of Totalitarianism (1951) and Eichmann in Jerusalem (1963). These were not historical chronicles in the conventional sense, but meditations on the breakdown of meaning, the limits of judgment, and the erosion of political responsibility. Arendt was not aligned with any one school of thought. Rather, her work constituted a deliberate act of thinking — a practice of remaining open to the complexity of reality, rather than reducing it to ideological systems. While her contemporaries were shaped by existentialist questions of freedom, alienation, and authenticity — influenced by figures such as Heidegger and Sartre — Arendt resisted abstract categories. Instead, she focused on how these existential conditions unfolded in the public world: How do individuals relate to others in shared space? What does it mean to appear before others, to act, to be seen, and to take responsibility? -/- Her analysis of power, authority, and the vulnerability of democratic institutions was not a theoretical exercise. It was rooted in lived experience — exile, statelessness, and political rupture — and informed by her critical engagement with Marxism, liberalism, and postwar human rights discourse. The intellectual landscape of the mid-20th century was searching for foundations after catastrophe. Her enduring significance lies in her ability to face this condition without resignation. -/- Thinking and Reality For Arendt, thinking is not reducible to the acquisition of knowledge, nor is it equivalent to instrumental reasoning. Thinking is a distinct mode of being — a dialogical process within the self, in which one interrogates, questions, and suspends certainty. It is not designed to produce immediate answers but to illuminate meaning. In this way, thinking reveals the invisible architecture of human experience: assumptions, values, and the fragile structures of moral judgment. Thinking, as Arendt conceives it, is not a utilitarian task; it is not defined by its outcomes. Rather, it is an activity through which individuals maintain their autonomy and engage with the world reflectively. It allows one to remain in relation with oneself — to become one’s own witness. Thinking is not merely a private pursuit, however; it forms the ground for responsibility in the public realm. The trial of Adolf Eichmann offers a critical demonstration of this principle. Arendt observed that Eichmann was not driven by hatred or ideology in the conventional sense. Instead, he exhibited an absence — a failure to think. He did not ask whether what he was doing was right; he only asked whether it conformed to the rules. This thoughtlessness, this moral vacuity, was what Arendt identified as the “banality of evil.” It was not the presence of monstrous intent that shocked her, but the absence of inner dialogue — the collapse of judgment in the face of bureaucratic normality. Some argue that her view overemphasizes the solitary nature of thought, neglecting the social, historical, and embodied conditions that shape human consciousness. Thinking, in this view, does not occur in isolation but is embedded in cultural narratives, material conditions, and interpersonal relationships. Others, particularly those working from empirical or scientific frameworks, view Arendt’s approach as speculative and insufficiently grounded in data. From this perspective, her phenomenological and interpretive style lacks the methodological rigor demanded by contemporary cognitive science or behavioral studies. There is also concern about the accessibility of her thought. Critics suggest that her ideal of thinking — involving distance from daily pressures — may reflect a privileged position, one not equally available to all. This raises important questions about whether meaningful reflection is reserved for the few, or whether it can be realized amid the constraints of ordinary life. Finally, some argue that her emphasis on reason and moral judgment underplays the role of emotion, empathy, and collective experience in ethical decision-making. Methodological norms are seen as rules defining a competitive game, and it is argued that rational recognition-seeking scientists can reach a collective agreement about which specific norms serve better their individual interests, especially if the choice is made `under a veil of ignorance', i.e. , before knowing what theory will be proposed by each scientist. Norms for theory assessment are distinguished from norms for theory choice (or inference rules), and it is argued that pursuit of recognition only affects this second (...) type of rule. An inference rule similar to `eliminative induction' is defended on the basis of such a possible agreement. According to this contractarian approach, both the explanation and the justification of scientific norms only need to refer to the preferences of individual scientists, without assuming the existence of `collective' points of view. Our closing forum on trigger warnings narrates the innovative practices that Alexis Lothian and Ramzi Fawaz propose in response to a contentious pedagogical debate. 560Preface Geneviève Pagé describes the history of the journey of the term gender in feminist circles in Montreal, using this case to comment on the dilemmas that arise from Anglocentrism in feminism. Pagé argues that in many ways, the term gender was not well suited to the context she highlights: Quebec feminists already possessed an intellectual infrastructure for referencing the meanings of the term gender through alternative phrasing, such as rapport sociaux de sexe. Furthermore, the grammatical concept of genre was “a concept central to the French language, but only peripheral in the English language,” and therefore, its use in French carried a potential “naturalizing” connotation. Nonetheless, given the dominance of English in feminist theory, Pagé concludes that “the polysemic nature of gender” allowed “for a fluid and multiple account of the local and global processes at work in the construction of women and men” in this context. Alix Genter gives us a nuanced understanding of butch genders and butch-femme aesthetics. Rather than relying on a stereotypical version of the 1950s queerly legible butch in masculine clothes, Genter argues that butchness itself was visually nuanced and coded in different ways than expected. Referencing a rich archive of 1950s-era photographs, Genter demonstrates that butch-identified women “conveyed their identities through alternate means that included clandestine codes and plays on women’s fashions.” This approach to butch aesthetics and lesbian self-representation opens up the common notion of a strict butch-femme contrast and introduces the concept of conscious mutual survival between the two lesbian identities. The appreciation of nuance continues in Nikki Lane’s review essay of reflexive ethnographic research about black queer communities. Lane’s review of recent work by Jafari S. Allen, Marlon Bailey, Mignon Moore, and Mireille Miller-Young highlights the attention these authors give to the complex politics of sexuality in everyday experiences of black communities. Being scientific research a process of social interaction, this process can be studied from a game-theoretic perspective. Some conceptual and formal instruments that can help to understand scientific research as a game are introduced, and it is argued that game theoretic epistemology provides a middle ground for 'rationalist' and 'constructivist' theories of scientific knowledge. In the first part , a description of the essential elements of game of science is made, using an inferentialist conception of rationality. In the second part (...) , some ideas for the reconstruction of case studies are introduced, and applied to one example: Latour's analysis of Joliot's attempt to build an atomic bomb. This paper aims at providing an epistemic defense of democracy based on John Dewey’s idea that democracies do not only find problems and provide solutions to them but they also articulate problems. According to this view, when citizens inquire about collective issues, they also partially shape them. This view contrasts with the standard account of democracy’s epistemic defense, according to which democracy’s is good at tracking and finding solutions that are independent of political will-formation and decision-making. It is also less (...) vulnerable to the criticisms that have been raised against the standard account. To show this, the paper develops a theory of expressive domination and argues that problem-articulation works best when it is inclusive and domination-free. Michel Foucault's death in 1984 coincided with the fading away of the hopes for social transformation that characterized the postwar period. In the decades following his death, neoliberalism has triumphed and attacks on social rights have become increasingly bold. If Foucault was not a direct witness of these years, his work on neoliberalism is nonetheless prescient: the question of liberalism occupies an important place in his last works. Since his death, Foucault's conceptual apparatus has acquired a central, even dominant position (...) for a substantial segment of the world's intellectual left. However, as the contributions to this volume demonstrate, Foucault's attitude towards neoliberalism was at least equivocal. Far from leading an intellectual struggle against free market orthodoxy, Foucault seems in many ways to endorse it. How is one to understand his radical critique of the welfare state, understood as an instrument of biopower? Or his support for the pandering anti-Marxism of the so-called new philosophers? Is it possible that Foucault was seduced by neoliberalism? This question is not merely of biographical interest: it forces us to confront more generally the mutations of the left since May 1968, the disillusionment of the years that followed and the profound transformations in the French intellectual field over the past thirty years. To understand the 1980s and the neoliberal triumph is to explore the most ambiguous corners of the intellectual left through one of its most important figures. (shrink)

In this paper we articulate a characterization of the concept of disease as a social problem. We argue that, from a social ontology point of view, diseases are problems that are identified and addressed within the framework of concrete social institutions and practices (those that shape medicine). This approach allows us to overcome the classical distinction between naturalist and normativist approaches in the philosophy of medicine, taking into account both the material and the symbolic factors that shape the categories and (...) determine the practices of medicine. In this article we defend the inferential view of scientific models and idealisation. Models are seen as “inferential prostheses” (instruments for surrogative reasoning) construed by means of an idealisation-concretisation process, which we essentially understand as a kind of counterfactual deformation procedure (also analysed in inferential terms). The value of scientific representation is understood in terms not only of the success of the inferential outcomes arrived at with its help, but also of the heuristic power of representation and their capacity to (...) correct and improve our models. This provides us with an argument against Sugden’s account of credible models: the likelihood or realisticness (their “credibility”) is not always a good measure of their acceptability. As opposed to “credibility” we propose the notion of “enlightening”, which is the capacity of giving us understanding in the sense of an inferential ability. (shrink)

We examine whether a taxpayer’s decision to choose a taxpayer-favorable characterization of income is associated with contextual and individual dimensions of that decision. Using a 2 × 2 factorial experimental design, we manipulate the prevailing social norm on whether there is a general belief that a specific form of income should be characterized as a capital gain or as ordinary income, and the group affiliation on whether the individual is making a tax characterization decision as a sole proprietor or as (...) a member of a group practice. Moreover, we measure participants’ fairness perception of characterizing the income as capital gains versus ordinary. We study the decisions of 180 graduate business and accounting students from two US business schools to explore these dimensions using a tax-ambiguous income situation. Results indicate that both contextual and individual dimensions impact taxpayer decisions. Specifically, the social norm and fairness perception of characterizing income as capital gains affects the likelihood of choosing such a characterization. Being a sole proprietor or a member of a group practice does not have any significant main effect. However, relative to all other conditions, taxpayers are most likely to characterize income as capital gains when both the social norms are for capital gains characterization and when the taxpayer is a member of a group practice. Results remain largely robust to a variety of alternative explanations. We conclude the paper with a discussion of our findings and their implications for tax policy, enforcement, and research. Albert Camus’ views contributed to the rise of the philosophy known as Absurdism, he defines the Absurd “as the conflict between the human tendency to seek inherent value and meaning in life, and the human inability to find any meaning in a purposeless, meaningless, and irrational universe, with the ‘unreasonable silence’ of the universe in response.” However, this world in itself is not absurd, what is absurd is our relationship with the universe, which is irrational. Camus is considered to be (...) an existentialist, even though he firmly rejected the term throughout his lifetime. He is properly categorised as an atheist existentialist. However, he would also disagree with this label. In his notebooks, he presents the following contradictory statement: -/- “I do not believe in God and I am not an atheist.” -/- This reflects the notion of the Absurd. The search of the possibility of the existence of God is humanly impossible, but this also entails that the proof that God does not exist is impossible too. He writes in The Myth of Sisyphus: “In a universe suddenly divested of illusions and lights, man feels an alien, a stranger. His exile is without remedy since he is deprived of the memory of a lost home or the hope of a promised land. This divorce between man and his life, the actor and his setting, is properly the feeling of absurdity.” The Myth of Sisyphus is a fierce expression of the Absurd. It starts off with a powerful and thought-provoking statement: “There is but one truly serious philosophical problem and that is suicide. Judging whether life is or is not worth living amounts to answering the fundamental question of philosophy.” . (shrink)

The poetic oeuvre of Rainer Maria Rilke represents a profound and sustained inquiry into the nature of being, perception, and the relationship between the inner self and the external world. More than a mere aesthete, Rilke was a philosophical poet whose work articulates a unique epistemology—a theory of knowledge based not on rational deduction but on a deep, empathetic, and transformative mode of seeing. His poetic vision is fundamentally reflective, not in the sense of passive mirroring, but as an active, (...) alchemical process where the act of attention itself becomes a creative and even sacred duty. This essay will argue that Rilke’s reflective poetic vision, developed through concepts of Dinggedichte (Thing-Poems), the imperative to see, and the central theme of transformation, proposes that true understanding of the world is achieved only through an internalization and poetic transmutation of external reality. -/- I. From Description to Dinggedicht: The Ethics of Seeing Rilke’s early development culminates in what critics term his Dinggedicht or "thing-poem," most notably in the collection New Poems (1907-1908). These are not mere descriptions of objects, like a panther, an archaic torso of Apollo, or a carousel. Instead, they represent the core of his reflective vision: the effacement of the poet’s subjective ego to fully inhabit the perceived object. Rilke’s method moves beyond Romantic subjectivity, where the external world is often a screen for the poet’s emotions. Instead, he practices a form of kenosis—an emptying of the self—to allow the object’s essence to speak through him. In poems like "The Panther," the gaze turns inward; the reflection is not of the poet upon the animal, but of the animal’s own imprisoned consciousness. The famous ending, where an image enters the panther’s gaze and “plunges into the heart and is gone,” illustrates a perception so intense it becomes a physical event. This is reflection as absorption. The poet’s role is to attend to the world with such patience, humility, and intensity that the thing itself begins to reveal its inner life (Weltinnenraum or "world-inner-space"). This attentive seeing is an ethical act, a form of love that grants the object its own autonomous existence and dignity. “The work of the eyes is done. Go now and do the heart-work on the images imprisoned within you.” -/- II. The Archaic Torso and the Imperative of Transformation This reflective vision finds its most powerful and demanding expression in the sonnet "Archaic Torso of Apollo" from Duino Elegies. The poem exemplifies the second stage of Rilke’s reflective process: how the deeply perceived object reflects back upon the viewer, transforming them. The poem begins with a meticulous, almost archaeological observation of the ruined statue. The speaker reflects upon it, noting the absent head, the “legendary gaze” still glowing within the torso, and the “curved breast” that “could blind you with its gleam.” This is not a passive observation; the torso is actively perceived as a vessel of immense energy. The reflection becomes reciprocal and transformative. The object, having been fully internalized through the act of deep seeing, now turns its gaze upon the viewer. The famous, devastating closing line—“You must change your life”—is the ultimate consequence of Rilke’s poetic vision. It is not a moral command from an external source, but an inevitable imperative that arises from within the encounter itself. The deeply perceived world, once taken into the self through poetry, reflects back a judgment on the inadequacy of one’s unexamined life. The torso, though headless, sees the observer more truly than they see themselves. True reflection, for Rilke, is never complete until it loops back to transform the reflector. The poem ceases to be about the object and becomes an event that happens to the reader. -/- III. Duino Elegies: Reflecting the Invisible In his masterpiece, Duino Elegies, Rilke’s reflective vision expands to a cosmic scale. His project here is the poetic reflection of the entirety of human existence—our relationship with angels, death, love, and the invisible. The central task of the poet, and indeed of humanity, is defined as the transformation of the visible world into the invisible realm of the spirit through the power of inwardness and language. The elegies are fraught with the anxiety that we are inadequate to this task, that we are “not reliably at home in the interpreted world.” Our reflection is clouded. Yet, Rilke insists that our purpose is to be the conscious interpreters of the world. As he writes in the Ninth Elegy, we are meant to take the external, visible things—“house, bridge, well, gate, jug”—and to “say them” in a way that transcends their physicality. This “saying” is not naming, but a deep, reflective internalization: “Earth, isn’t this what you want: to arise invisible in us? Is it not your dream to be invisible one day?—Earth! Invisible!” This is the zenith of Rilke’s reflective vision: the poet acts as a medium through which the tangible world is reflected, cherished, and transmuted into intangible meaning. The poet’s inner self becomes the Weltinnenraum, the space where the external and internal merge. Reflection becomes creation. An epistemic notion of verisimilitude (as the ‘degree in which a theory seems closer to the full truth to a scientific community’) is defined in several ways. Application to the structuralist description of theories is carried out by introducing a notion of ‘empirical regularity’ in structuralist terms. It is argued that these definitions of verisimilitude can be used to give formal reconstructions of scientific methodologies such as falsificationism, conventionalism and normal science.

Democracy’s current crisis includes erosions in both its epistemic and participatory dimensions. In my paper, I present two related responses usually given to it and explore their mutual relation. On the one hand, many authors argue that we should address the phenomenon of post-truth and its negative effects on democratic politics by cultivating citizens’ digital education as well encouraging civic engagement in the search for truth. On the other hand, many authors defend the need of participatory initiatives as a way (...) of bringing citizens to appropriate democratic institutions. Drawing on an analysis of the interaction between epistemic and participatory norms, I argue that the potential of participatory initiatives can be jeopardized by the epistemological assumptions underlying the current so-called ‘battle’ against post-truth. Instead of reducing citizens’ basic epistemic roles as critical receivers of information and knowledge aggregators, I argue that we should rather promote cooperative epistemologies, which ensure that citizens cultivate the necessary conditions to sustain and expand projects of political participation. SELF - CONSCIOUSNESS IS A FIELD OF RESONANCE -/- In the stillness between breath and thought, the human spirit awakens—not as a solitary flame, but as a co-creator of worlds. Through our hands and words, through temples and tools, we give birth to forms. These artefacts, these institutions, are not inert—they pulse with the memory of our longing, our reason, our dreams. As we move through them, and they through us, we shape what we know and become what we create. (...) The mind is not a mirror, cold and exact. It is a sea that reflects the sky, but the sky it reflects is one it has painted. In each reflection lies a paradox: the world appears as an objective truth, yet it is carved from the substance of subjectivity. The spirit is doubled—at once the dreamer and the dream, the builder and the house, the question and the answer. -/- Thus, Hegel names two streams of the Spirit: the Subjective and the Objective. Like the pulse of a star that beats with light and shadow, these are not two but one—dancing in and out of form. The subjective is the whisper within, the soul’s gaze upon itself, the spark of inner intuition. The objective is the echo made manifest, the structures of law, of language, of shared existence. Each is the breath of the other; their fusion is the Absolute Spirit, where time becomes meaning and history becomes truth. And yet, always, there is a dissonance—a sacred tension between the spirit’s infinite longing and its finite forms. The world we make does not always echo the world we are. This distance births a telos, a purpose, a spiral of becoming. Hegel saw it not as failure, but as destiny—a journey of the spirit through the dialectic of self and world. In the realm of Subjective Spirit, the soul rises in solitude. It learns to know, to will, to feel—thefragile architecture of awareness built from intuition ascending into concept. But this "self" is never isolated. It is an abstraction, a silhouette against the sky of the Absolute. Alone, it is a hollow echo. Only in the context of culture, history, and shared time does it become real. Hegel teaches us that the sovereign self—the thinker of Kant, the "I" of Descartes —is not the origin, but the child of time. The self is not given; it is earned, through the alchemy of relation. In every heartbeat of history, consciousness emerges not alone, but in communion—with the world it shapes and the others who shape it. Self-consciousness, then, is not a mirror—it is a field of resonance. It arises when thought bends back upon itself and sees its own becoming. Yet what it sees is not abstract—it sees its deeds, its creations, its loves, its laws. The objective world is not other, but the reflection of our inward stars. Hegel speaks of two motions of becoming. One flows from intuition to idea, where the soul lifts its gaze to theory and act. The other moves from concept to world, where thought incarnates in law and language. These are the twin wings of the spirit, and only in their flight does the self find its truth. So we arrive at a cosmic understanding: the self is the world made aware of itself. It is not bound by skin or skull. It is the meeting point of memory and possibility, a star within the Absolute Spirit’s constellation. -/- THE SONG OF LABOUR AND DESIRE: A JOURNEY THROUGH BECOMING -/- Not only the cities we dwell in, not only the thoughts we hold in the hush of midnight, but even the rhythm of our hearts, the fire in our gaze, the shape of our hands—all are children of labour. Across the ages, through silence and song, the human being has woven themselves from the threads of work and want, from longing and shaping. Look into the world, and you see yourself. Not in reflection as in glass, but in a mirror that breathes and pulses—the world does not echo us passively. No, the world responds to us in kind. We reach, and it reshapes. We take, and it takes hold of us. Thus begins the dance, the dialectic—not of cold theory, but of desire and labor, of need and becoming. In the beginning, we did not know we were separate. We touched the world as we touched our skin. Nature cradled us, and we did not yet say “I” or “you.” The child, like the early soul of humankind, is fused with the earth and sky. But with each grasp, each hunger, each satisfaction, the line grows clearer. In the meeting of hand and fruit, eye and fire, breath and word, we awaken to a truth: there is me, and there is not-me. -/- Thus the world is not found—it is made. Bit by bit, in reaching and shaping, the soul imprints itself upon stone and wind. Tools arise—not only from wood and bone, but from the needs they answer and the dreams they foreshadow. And the body itself, molded by time and touch, becomes an artefact of the soul’s desire. The hand shapes the tool, but the tool reshapes the hand. The mind speaks in symbols, and the symbol teaches the mind to see. This is not a process that ends. In each generation, the artefacts of the old become the cradle of the new. The child born to digital light navigates the city of screens as once the hunter read the forest path. Their thoughts do not move as ours did; their inner life is coded in circuits and swipes. Yet this too is labour—subtle, symbolic, silent. The mastery of interface becomes the extension of the self. The map is not known, but it is lived. These artefacts—stone, script, software—are not only objects. They are soul made visible. They are the dialectical traces of subjectivity, externalized spirit. And in using them, in navigating the forest of symbols, the subject internalizes the world anew. In every movement, the self becomes more fully itself. Self-consciousness is not born from thought alone, but from this long arc of interaction, from the sacred practice of shaping and being shaped. Before we recognize one another, before we gaze into the eye of the other and know our own reflection, we must first become. Before recognition, there must be something to be recognized. Self-consciousness is not given—it is forged in the fire of need and creation. Ethical life, that higher flame of human existence, does not appear from nothing. It grows from the roots of pre-ethical life, from the rhythm of doing and making. And so, in the great unfolding of spirit, the dialectic of desire and labour precedes the mirror of the other. The first consciousness is solitary—not in loneliness, but in purity. It does not yet know the other, but it knows the world, and knows that it is not the world. That knowing is the seed of all future becoming. In time, another light will rise. Another subject, another gaze. And then begins the second movement—the dialectic of recognition, where I become for you, and you become for me. But even this communion rests on the silent, ancient groundwork of labour—on the stones we laid, the words we shaped, the tools we held in trembling hands. The journey is one. Fragmented only for our understanding. In truth, the self, the world, and the other spiral together in a single cosmic breath. (shrink)

Franz Huber’s (2008a) attempt to unify inductivist and hypothetico-deductivist intuitions on confirmation by means of a single measure are examined and compared with previous work on the theory of verisimilitude or truthlikeness. The idea of connecting ‘the logic of confirmation’ with ‘the logic of acceptability’ is also critically discussed, and it is argued that ‘acceptability’ takes necessarily into account some pragmatic criteria, and that at least two normative senses of ‘acceptability’ must be distinguished: ‘acceptable’ in the sense of ‘being allowed (...) to accept’, and ‘acceptable’ in the sense of ‘being obliged to accept’. Chang’s arguments against ‘standard scientific realism’ and in favour of ‘pragmatic realism’ in his recent book Realism for realistic people are addressed. It is argued that Chang’s interpretation of ‘truth’ and ‘reality’ in terms of the contribution to the operational coherence of practices is not superior to a more traditional ‘scientific realist’ understanding of those concepts. In particular, it is shown that a deflationary account of truth can be congenial to a realist and pragmatist theory of scientific knowledge, and that (...) it does not suffer the problems Chang attributes to it. The thought of Zen is often misunderstood, especially when its doctrine of “absolute nothingness” is taken as a form of philosophical nihilism. Such a misinterpretation overlooks the essence of Zen teaching, which is not trapped within the narrow duality of “being” and “non-being.” On the contrary, Zen transcends these terms, showing that truth lies neither exclusively in existence nor in non-existence, but in a field where these distinctions cease to hold absolute power. Thus, the “nothingness” of Zen is not the (...) emptiness of despair but the openness that contains everything. In Zen tradition, the concept of Buddha-nature illuminates this very paradox. It is described as a positive term for absolute nothingness, encompassing both “being” and “non-being” in an ultimate way. This is not a logical contradiction but a higher, paradoxical logic: the “logic of being/non-being.” In Zen experience, existence and non-existence do not negate one another but coexist, revealing a deeper dimension of reality. Buddha-nature, therefore, is not an abstract metaphysical concept but the very dynamic reality that permeates all phenomena, giving them life and meaning. This stance has contemporary significance. In a world of modernity and globalization, where traditional certainties have been shaken and nihilism often appears as the dead end of human thought, the perspective of Zen’s “absolute nothingness” offers a way out. Since it does not deny emptiness but embraces it as a creative principle, it can transform the experience of meaninglessness into an experience of freedom and openness. Religion, if it draws from this perspective, does not remain trapped in rigid theologies nor dissolve into deconstruction. Instead, it can face nihilism not through denial but by transcending it, showing that at the heart of nothingness lies the infinite potential of being and non-being together. Zen, then, is not a path that leads to nihilism, but a way of overcoming it. Its teaching of “absolute nothingness” and its logic of “being/non-being” call us to see reality beyond the dilemmas imposed by Western rationalism. Within this opening, religion, philosophy, and human existence as a whole can find new ways to reconcile with emptiness and transform it into a source of freedom, meaning, and creativity. Interdependence in Zen: A Network of Boundless Relation -/- At the heart of Zen thought lies the idea that nothing exists autonomously or in isolation. Every being, every phenomenon, every moment is interconnected with all others. This empirical realization, which surpasses philosophical theory and becomes lived experience in Zen practice, is expressed through the term “interdependence.” The individual is not a closed, self-sufficient subject but a node in an infinite web of relations. When Zen speaks of “emptiness” (śūnyatā), it does not mean that things are nonexistent but that they exist only in relation to others, while still maintaining their “ownness” or particularity. A flower, for example, is not just a “flower”: within it are the sun, the rain, the soil, the air, time, the labor of the farmer. Remove these, and the flower ceases to exist as a distinct being. The uniqueness of each being is recognized and exists only in coexistence with others. In this way, Zen teaches us that every form of life is inseparably bound to the whole of the cosmos. The experience of this interdependence has deep existential and ethical consequences. First, it dismantles the illusion of isolated existence, which often breeds arrogance or despair. Second, it cultivates compassion: if “I” and “you” are not absolutely separate, then caring for the other is simultaneously caring for the self. In this light, kindness is not a moral imperative but the natural expression of the unity of life. -/- Zen calls us to live with awareness of this interdependence. Daily meditation practice is not withdrawal from the world but a return to the deeper experience of unity with it. In every breath, every sound, every glance, the continuous interweaving of all things is revealed. Then the individual recognizes that there is no “inside” and “outside,” but only the open, shared life that includes everything. La mort de Michel Foucault en 1984 a coïncidé avec l'évanouissement des espoirs de transformation sociale qui avaient caractérisé l'après-guerre. Dans les décennies qui ont suivi sa mort, le néolibéralisme a triomphé et les attaques contre la sphère publique se sont amplifiées. Si Foucault n'a pas été un témoin direct de ces années, ses travaux sur le néolibéralisme n'en sont pas moins prémonitoires : la question du libéralisme occupe une place importante dans ses dernières œuvres. Depuis sa mort, l'appareil conceptuel (...) de Foucault a acquis une position centrale, voire dominante, pour une partie importante de la gauche intellectuelle mondiale. Cependant, comme le montrent les contributions à ce volume, l'attitude de Foucault à l'égard du néolibéralisme était pour le moins équivoque. Loin de mener une lutte intellectuelle contre l'orthodoxie du marché libre, Foucault a semblé y voir une opportunité pour inventer de nouvelles subjectivités. Un espace libéré du pouvoir pastoral de l'Etat social. Comment comprendre sa critique radicale de ce dernier, comprise comme un instrument du biopouvoir? Ou son soutien à l'anti-marxisme des nouveaux philosophes? Est-il possible que Foucault ait été séduit par le néolibéralisme? Cette question n'a pas qu'un intérêt biographique : elle nous oblige à nous confronter plus généralement aux mutations de la gauche depuis mai 1968, aux désillusions des années qui ont suivi et aux transformations profondes du champ intellectuel français depuis trente ans. Comprendre les années 1980 et le triomphe néolibéral, c'est explorer les recoins les plus ambigus de la gauche intellectuelle à travers l'une de ses figures les plus importantes.
